CRETACEOUS AMMONITE DUO 16x20 (MF-4)

Madagascar (about 100 mya), 16" x 20"

Ammonites are extinct Cephalopods that resemble our modern day Nautilus but are more closely related to squid and octopus. Various species can be found all over the world representing many different epochs in history, but those mined in Madagascar are commonly the most beautifully preserved.

The sequential chambers of the ammonite's shell mark the growth of the organism and acted as a gas ballast to keep the animal afloat.
